Smells like Christmas!

Smells like Christmas!

Christmas is almost here and traditional Christmas sweets fill the house with aromas that awaken childhood memories and fill us with anticipation for the arrival of Santa. So decorate the house and greet him with the most delicious traditional melomakarona

Ingredients for the syrup

  • 2 cups honey
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 cups wate
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 cloves

Ingredients for the melomakarona

  • 2 cups oil
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup brandy
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • orange zest
  • 2 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1.5 tsp. cinnamon
  • 8 cups flour

Syrup preparation
Put all ingredients in a saucepan and boil for 5 minutes. Remove from stove and allow to cool. Prepare the syrup at least 1 hour before the melomakarona in order to allow it ample time to cool down.

Melomakarona preparation
Pour the olive oil, brandy, sugar, zest and cinnamon in a bowl and stir with a whisk or mixer. Add the baking soda and baking powder in the orange juice, stir and add to the mixture. Sieve the flour and add to mixture, stirring by hand. Stir for a maximum of 1 minute. Shape melomakarona into uniform sizes and bake in a preheated oven for about 30 minutes at 190o C, until crisp and golden.

Dipping the melomakarona in the syrup
Melomakarona should by dipped in the cold syrup while hot. As the melomakarona will increase the temperature of our syrup, we recommend you split the prepared syrup in two pans, so you can cool it down in the refrigerator.

Let melomakarona sit in the syrup for 10'-15' and then place on a wire rack to cool, so that they don't become soggy. Sprinkle with crushed walnuts while hot.

Bon appetit!
